Powell County’s Clark Fork River Superfund Site

The data repository in Deer Lodge has information regarding Powell County’s portion of the cleanup within the Upper Clark Fork River Federal Superfund Operable Unit.

Powell County’s portion comprises a 43-mile stretch of the river where the majority of the cleanup will occur. It travels downstream from the county’s southern border to Garrison.

The heavy metals (cadmium, copper, zinc and lead) and arsenic in the Clark Fork River are from historic mining, milling and smelting processes linked to the Anaconda Company operations in Butte and Anaconda.

Section VI-F of the Powell County Zoning and Development Regulations contains provisions relating to the management of properties lying within the Clark Fork River Superfund Overlay District.  As the regulations note, the District covers the area along the Clark Fork River and the Valiton Ditch contaminated by historic mining and smelting activities in Butte and Anaconda.  The Planning Department included the text from Section VI-F as well as map inserts illustrating the District between Racetrack and Garrison as a convenient reference.  The Planning Department has the ability to provide maps showing the location of individual properties in relationship to the District.  Please contact the Planning Department with any questions relating to the Superfund Overlay District or its map.
