County Attorney

Department Overview:

The Powell County Attorney is an elected official, representing Powell County and the State of Montana within our county.

The Office of County Attorney prosecutes all felony crimes committed in Powell County, as well as all misdemeanor crimes committed outside of the limits of the City of Deer Lodge.

The office handles all of Powell County’s cases of abuse and neglect of children, cases involving delinquent juveniles, and cases of commitment to the Montana State Hospital for treatment of serious mental health disorders.

The office ensures that crime victims are treated fairly and are kept up to date regarding the status of their case, both before and after sentencing.

The Powell County Attorney promotes public safety and ensures offender accountability by prosecuting criminal cases; advocating for victims and victims’ rights; facilitating financial restitution for victims; and creating and refining processes to deal with criminal justice issues.  The Powell County Attorney also is responsible for defending or prosecuting all civil claims for or against Powell County; and providing timely and sound legal advice to all offices, departments and local government entities within the County.
